Kim - Rudyard Kipling

Magyarországon most adják ki először a könyvet teljes terjedelemben, olvasom a hírekben. Én már néhány éve elolvastam, angolul. Tetszett, szerettem, de nem érztem, amit Szerb Antal mond a könyvről (hogy Kipling legjobb műve) - bizonyára itt húzódik a nyelvi határ: annyira nem tudok angolul. Kár. Külön történet, hogy került a kezembe - Szántó Piroska egyik könyvében írt róla valami olyat, hogy iskolás éveinek egyik legkedvesebb, nagyon szórakoztató olvasmánya volt a Kim. És én soha nem is hallottam a műről!? Ezek azok a kellemetlen pillanatok, amikor úgy érzem, hiába vagyok művelt értelmiségiként számontartva (haha, ugyan ki tartana számon és miért), az a bizonyos 'polgári műveltség' valami más... Hát megvettem és elolvastam a könyvet - és jó volt olvasni, de egészen bizonyosan nem ugyanúgy, mint Szántónak. Na de én nem is vagyok egy nagy költő felesége :)

Kipling's Kim is published in Hungary unabridged - at the first time! I have read it already, it was some years ago; and I liked the book but never felt it is a masterpiece. But, of course, that was my fault - most probably my English is too poor for the book. Not a good feeling. It is also an interesting story (for me) how I came to the title at all. I have read Maugli, and some short stories as well but never heard of Kipling's 'real books'. Szántó Piroska - a famous artist, and the wife of an even more famous poet - wrote some autobiographical books (those should come here sometimes as well); she told a lot about her youth and the education years. She has mentioned there Kim as one of the most entertaining and impressing books - and I was depressed not even know the title!? Such moments are 'annihilating' for someone who thinks of himself as a learned intellectual, and I had to admit that those 1930' years (or so, I am not sure) and a good 'bourgeois' education were quite different as mine... So I bought the book and and enjoyed it, but for sure not on such a 'high level' than Szántó. But, I am not the wife of a great poet, I don't have to :)
